Five Coffee Shops Near Columbia University
I cannot tell you how many times me and my fellow Columbia Pub Course-ers googled this one. To be honest, my list isn't much better than the ones we found. But it does tell you that though the pickings are slim, these coffee shops are your most delicious and best bets.
Joes Coffee is an on campus option right next to the Journalism School. Slightly overpriced for a student created latte in a tinier turquoise blue to-go cup than most places, but it still managed to wake me up and smile with each sip on most mornings. Also, the convince here was definitely key.
WiFi with Columbia University login of course is a go.
Most likely your very best bet if you have a little time one morning to spare. Their coffee is amazing--and stay a while! The Hungarian Pastry Shop has indoor and outdoor seating and some of the best pastries around. They were voted so by New Yorkers most recently this past summer. Many say to try the cheesecake. I say grab yourself a cappuccino and house-made croissant with butter and jam. Heaven! And just what the city calls you for slow weekend mornings with a friend.
If you plan to get a lot of work done though, beware. There is no WiFi. At least none that I found yet.
Take a walk even further uptown to 126th street and visit the cozy environment of Max's. Though more of a sit down place with both food and your iconic coffee beverages, I had a great evening of getting writing done and sipping a chai while sitting back in a vintage chair by the open cafe front. Definitely a place to check out, though if you are plant based, something to make note of is that they only have soy milk as an alternative. My almond milk soul cried.
Also, it is sill a question if they have WiFi. While I was there working on my computer, I ended up getting a lot done in my documents, so never actually got up to ask what the password was. Definitely a great place to cozy up though with a good book.
A quick stop when running back to class from the 96th street metro stop when the one doesn't quite make it to the ideal 116th street location. Or maybe you were drawn into the narrow coffee shop by the sassy chalk signs positioned out front. "Buy one coffee, get another at full price!" Ha ha. Real funny Oren's.
So coffee on fellow upper west siders and those who plan to go on as I did to The Columbia Publishing Course next summer. Trust me, you are going to need the extra caffeine as well as vanilla filled comfort.
Also TIP! Bring a reusable to-go cup. It was definitely something I could have used and plus, it's sustainable and usually gets you a few cents off your order!

Startbucks and Pret
I know. I know. But seriously, from what I experienced around the University, sometimes when you are in a rush it doesn't get much better than this. Both located right across the street from the main sector of the University on 115th, indulge with a double shot or frappuchino on a hot day. And Pret has some good iced coffee if I do say so myself. So coffee on fellow upper west siders and those who plan to go on as I did to The Columbia Publishing Course next summer.
